The Ladies’ Book of Etiquette

The Ladies’ Book of Etiquette (2021) contains text from an 1860 manual of the same name, written by Florence Hartley. Text from the manual was manipulated, recombined, or excerpted and letterpress printed on hand-sewn linen napkins. The napkins are housed in a clamshell box, allowing viewers to handle and rearrange the content as desired.

This book explores feminine relationships and the societal expectations that have followed women throughout centuries. It allows viewers to explore ideas of structure through both the physical form and the conceptual foundation.

Letterpress printed napkins housed in a clamshell box. 8”x8”. Edition of 15. 2021.
